JC GoAI Parent-Child Workshop Addresses Three Major Parental Concerns, Promoting Collaborative Learning
The JC GoAI Project recently hosted a parent-child workshop at KCBC Hay Nien Primary School in Ma On Shan. The event aimed to dispel three major parental concerns regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI) while promoting "Collaborative Learning." The goal is to transform technology from a mere study tool into a medium that strengthens parent-child bonds and supports children’s growth.

Collaborative AI Learning: Solving Everyday Academic Challenges

The workshop used three core subjects, Chinese, English, and Mathematics, as entry points to design AI application scenarios rooted in daily learning needs. In the Chinese Language section, instructors demonstrated how to use AI to guide students through paragraph-based writing. This moved students from "low-level" usage (simply asking for answers) to a more sophisticated model where AI acts as a tutor, teaching writing techniques and structure, ultimately using AI as a brainstorming assistant.

For English Language learning, participants used AI to instantly generate visual vocabulary cards, combining words and phonetics with images to help students memorize vocabulary more effectively. The Mathematics session focused on "Small-Step Instruction," using AI to break down complex problems into manageable steps. This allows parents to guide their children through problem-solving logic, even if they aren't immediately familiar with the specific math topics themselves.

Program Director Daniel Lai: Prioritizing AI Literacy and Ethics

In an interview, Mr. Daniel Lai, Programme Director of JC GoAI, stated that the core of the initiative is not just teaching technical skills, but nurturing students' AI literacy and ethical values. He emphasized that future education requires students not only to know how to use tools, but to judge when to use them and how to maintain the right values during the process. He used an aviation metaphor, describing AI as a "co-pilot" that provides constant data and support, but reminding us that it is always the human who holds the controls and sets the direction.

As AI becomes an integral part of the learning process, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has pledged over HK$255 million to launch the "JC GoAI" project in collaboration with CUHK. A workshop held on April 10 aimed to deepen parents' understanding of AI education. Some parents expressed that they previously feared their children would become overly dependent on AI, potentially hindering their critical thinking and expression. However, after the workshop, they realized AI could be a tool to prompt thinking rather than just a source of answers. They now look forward to exploring AI applications with their children to foster both learning and family relationships.
